- FACT: Election LawsHere's the short explanation. A filibuster is a Senate rule which effectively allows the minority party in the Senate to require a super majority of 60 votes to pass legislation instead of a simple majority of 51 votes. Since the senate is typically split very closely between the two parties, it forces each party to convince at least a handful of Senators from the opposing party to vote for their legislation, or it will not pass. Without the filibuster rule, whichever party controlled the senate could completely control everything happening in the senate without opposition from the minority party. Here's a technical explanation of the filibuster. It's an interesting "parliamentary" feature of our democracy dating back to 1917. https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/filibuster-explained
- FACT: AbortionAs of today, the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated a near-total abortion ban from 1864. The law carries a sentence of two to five years in prison upon conviction. So far, attempts to stop the ban have been blocked. The ruling puts the issue of abortion front and center in this year’s elections, a key to decide the presidency and partisan control of the U.S. Senate. Democrats immediately blamed Trump because he appointed the justices who formed the majority that ended the national right to abortion. Biden is emphasizing efforts to restore abortion rights, while Trump has avoided endorsing a national abortion ban. In a statement today, Trump said that Arizona went "too far" with this ruling, but nonetheless insists that abortion is a subject that should be left to state governments.
- OPINION: AbortionThe new near-total abortion ban instated by the AZ Supreme Court, and abortion in general, is a very controversial topic among people of both parties. Chaos has erupted since the ban was announced, and will continue as many on both sides call for a repeal of this law. This also may lead to Republican losses for Trump.
