As of today, the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated a near-total abortion ban from 1864. The law carries a sentence of two to five years in prison upon conviction. So far, attempts to stop the ban have been blocked.
The ruling puts the issue of abortion front and center in this year’s elections, a key to decide the presidency and partisan control of the U.S. Senate.
Democrats immediately blamed Trump because he appointed the justices who formed the majority that ended the national right to abortion.
Biden is emphasizing efforts to restore abortion rights, while Trump has avoided endorsing a national abortion ban.
In a statement today, Trump said that Arizona went "too far" with this ruling, but nonetheless insists that abortion is a subject that should be left to state governments.
